About Avidya

Avidya is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘ignorance.’ At its core, Avidya Running is an exploration into the dark places of our own ignorance using endurance running as our light. If we confuse mundane life to be the only reality, we remain ignorant of a truer reality.

We believe our ignorance is the root of our suffering. We put on challenging events to explore concepts like egos, attachments, aversions, and our identities.

We recognize that a community of strong, humble, hardworking people who are also interested in asking these questions makes a family. Avidya Running is a new race company, currently hosting events in New Mexico with a mission to grow and host premier events throughout the US.

Our Mission & Vision

Hosting trail and and endurance events to take you to beautiful spaces and give you the opportunity to suffer better. We build events for you to push your beliefs and spirit further, deeper, stronger. Come and challenge the stories you tell. Come and break yourself. Grow intrinsically. Join our community. Revel in the bad weather. Go home happy, hungry, and dirty.

DEI Statement

If you love the trail and support stewardship of the outdoors, you are our people.

We strive to cultivate a welcoming environment (online and in-person) while removing barriers to participation. We want the reputation of Avidya to feel roomy and inclusive, and we take action to make that tangible for our runners.

We do not tolerate discrimination of any kind within our groups, events, volunteers, staff, social media presence, or any other extension of Avidya Running. We believe that diversity is an ever-growing spectrum and a necessary part of a healthy community where people are heard and valued.

Anyone who is willing to suffer and work is welcome at our events. It is our responsibility to protect a culture of inclusivity and safety.

Code of Ethics

Be a dirtbag, not a scumbag.

Be careful with your language, especially online. We do not tolerate damaging, demeaning comments. You are not entitled to our events, you are invited to our events.

Have integrity. Show up for yourself and others.

Help each other.

Lift up, don’t tear down.

We are here to set the standard for trail and ultrarunning: be honest and have fun.

Leave your ego at home when you run with us. This is about you, not you vs. everyone else.

No whining.

Event Rules

Rules will vary based on event and permitting; please see individual events for course-specific requirements.

Our rules are simple: to ensure we are exemplary stewards of public land, to ensure the safety of others, and to ensure respect and fairness to all participants.

Violating an event’s rules (runner or crew) risks the ability to participate with us in the future.

Avidya Running reserves the right to accept or deny participation at our events within our communities based on our DEI, Code of Ethics, and Event Rules.

POLICIES

Refunds: If you need or choose to withdraw from the event for any reason, you will get a 50% refund up to the date posted in UltraSignup. After that, no refunds are issued – even though we understand that life happens (ours does, too). Please do not ask for an exception to this industry standard. Recognize that you are agreeing to our rules and policies by registering for our event.

Cancellations: In the unlikely event of catastrophe or natural disaster, and we are unable to put on the race due to forces outside of our control or the safety of runners, we will refund 50% and split the loss 50/50. If the weather is just bad, plan to run. We love bad weather.

Injury or illness: Same refund policy listed above.

Pregnancy: Email us directly. We do not currently have a deferral option but are happy to work with you individually to find a solution.

Military: Email us directly. We do not currently have a deferral option but are happy to work with you individually to find a solution.

Bib Transfers: You may use UltraSignup to transfer your bib to someone else until the posted date in the UltraSignup event. You may not bandit our races. You may not give your bib to someone else and let them run in your name. You must transfer the bib officially, or you jeopardize running with Avidya in the future (we need to accurately know who is on our course and who we are responsible for at all times, zero exceptions). There is no same-day bib transfer option available at any event.
