Fat Ass Events

Shenanigains

Menaul Trailhead, Albuquerque

March 15, 2025

This is a free, fat ass event. We are out there running, and you can join us if you want to!

You have 10 hours to collect as much vert as you can or want to by running hill repeats: 1 lap is 500′ and just under 1 mile.

How’s it work?

The Whitewash climb is a gnarly, technical climb with 500′ of gain in about 0.5 miles. At the top, we will have a pot of gold coins. Each time you summit, grab one coin and head back down, place the coin the collection jar, and make a tally next to your name.

Each coin = 500′ climbed.

CREW
Crew is welcome! Hang out, hike, bring dogs, set up basecamp – the open space is open to the public and this is a big group run. Bring something to share. The picnic table at the bottom is the start/finish of every lap, so you will be back at your re-supply every mile. The picnic table is a pleasant 0.1 mile easy trail from the base of the hill.

IS IT MARKED?
The trail will be lightly flagged to help you, but there is no mandatory course up or down. Whatever way you go, always stay on a trail (there are a few up Whitewash).

DO I HAVE TO STAY FOR 10 HOURS?
Nope. The purpose is to come challenge yourself and find your climbing legs for summertime.

WHAT ABOUT BATHROOMS?
There are no official bathrooms at this trailhead, unfortunately. Plan accordingly. You may absolutely leave the course at any time and come back.

PARKING – Do not park at the trailhead.

You may get dropped off at the Menaul Trailhead parking lot (take Menaul all the way to the mountain; there is a parking lot at the end which is the closest spot to our event). Or, if you need to park, please park on any residential road stemming from Menaul Rd, Monte Largo, Rebonito Road, or Indian School trailhead and enjoy your warm-up walk. There are tons of convenient nearby public roads. We will be there all day and don’t want to take up parking for everyone else.

WHAT TO BRING?
Something delicious to share, sunscreen, plenty of water/drinks, your beastiest legs, poles if you got ’em and grippy shoes.

AWARDS?
We will still do special awards for 10,000+ feet climbed.
Come out and get uncomfortable. Do 1 lap or 30!

DO I HAVE TO REGISTER? Nope! RSVP’ing on Facebook helps us estimate numbers, but we know not everyone has FB. You can also just show up and sign in.

Academy of Pain

Cherry Hills Public Library, Albuquerque

April 5, 2025

Last long run for Jemez, anyone? Jumpstart your spring training with us with a ridiculous amount of loops around Academy: 12 hours of fun at your own pace, with friends, and with plenty of snacks. The goal is to always do just one more loop. This will be our fourth (and biggest?!) year running!

PARKING & START
You are welcome to park anywhere on the Academy Loop and jump in, but there is free parking on the surrounding residential streets and back lot of the library.

Cherry Hills Public Library
6901 Barstow St NE, Albuquerque, NM 87111

DO I HAVE TO STAY FOR 12 HOURS?
This is a 12-hour event, so while we hope you’ll push yourself for as many hours as possible, you are more than welcome to jump in at any time and run any distance/amount of time.

DO I NEED TO REGISTER?
Please RSVP on Facebook though so we can estimate awards.

WHAT AWARDS?
A fat ass traditionally does not have awards, but Avidya Running likes to make homemade painted awards for 50k, 50 Mile, 100k, and PR (your personal longest distance record!).

HOW DO I TRACK MY LOOPS?
The tally board to count your loops and aid station will be at the intersection of Barstow and Harper (at the stoplight). Each loop = 1 tally.

FOOD BATHROOMS WATER?
This event is free and unsupported. Please bring everything you need to hit your goals and BRING SOMETHING TO SHARE at the aid station. Many people bring food, coolers, clothes, chairs, and you can also stop at your car to resupply any time. We will have an aid station stockpile of snacks if everyone brings a treat. There are no bathrooms directly on the course (the loop runs around a private school), but there are plenty of free restrooms nearby or across the street. You may leave and come back anytime.

THE COURSE
The loop is 3.4 miles (ish) and flat (ish). It is mostly crushed gravel, but a few places have sidewalk or an optional bike path. Dogs and strollers allowed and welcome.

DO I HAVE TO REGISTER? Nope! RSVP’ing on Facebook helps us estimate numbers, but we know not everyone has FB. You can also just show up and sign in.
